Tomatoes are part of the nightshade family of vegetables, and green parts of the plant including unripe tomatoes, stems, and leaves contain toxins called solanine and tomatine. Dogs should avoid pasta sauce, due to other ingredients common in pasta sauce that are toxic to dogs, such as garlic and onion. Dogs can eat bite-size pieces of red, ripe, plain tomatoes, without the stem or leaves.
Caution: Dogs should avoid canned versions of foods due to their high sodium and/or sugar content, and opt for the fresh or frozen version instead. Read more.
