Olives are not toxic to dogs, and can be safe in small quantities. Dogs should never be given olives with pits, as they can cause choking or gastrointestinal obstructions, and can crack teeth. Canned or pickled olives should be avoided due to their often excessive amounts of sodium, which is unhealthy for dogs and can even lead to toxicity. Olives that have seasonings, oils, or have been soaked in alcohol should never be given to dogs. Olives are high in fat, and ingesting high amounts of fat can cause dogs to develop pancreatitis, which can lead to an emergency veterinarian visit. Dogs can eat small amounts of plain, unsalted, unseasoned, pitted olives.
Caution: Foods that are high in fat can cause dogs to get gastrointestinal upset and even pancreatitis. Read more.
