Oatmeal can be a safe food for dogs. The high fiber content of oatmeal can cause your dog gastrointestinal upset, including gas, diarrhea, and vomiting, especially if your dog is not used to eating fiber. Eating too much oatmeal can also cause dogs to develop bloat, a life-threatening condition which leads to an emergency veterinarian visit. Dogs should only eat plain oatmeal. Some oatmeal flavorings and add-ins, like raisins, are toxic to dogs, and usually have high amounts of sugar, which they should not eat, or artificial sweeteners, such as xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Dogs should not eat instant oatmeals. Dogs should only eat cooked oatmeal made with water, not dairy. Dogs are very sensitive to dairy, and their bodies have a difficult time breaking down lactose. Dogs can eat small amounts of plain, unflavored, unsweetened oatmeal cooked with water, not dairy.
